“The Wars of the Roses lasted from 1455 to 1487…” Alice’s sister looked up from her book. “Now, Alice—tell me, which side won in the end? The red rose, or the white?”
“The white rose, perhaps!” said Alice, settling the finished flower crown onto her little kitten, Dinah.
Her sister set down the textbook, looked up at the tree, and said firmly, “Alice! Could you please pay attention to your history lesson?”
“But Sister,” said Alice, still fiddling idly with the daisies on the crown, “who could ever sit through a book with no pictures in it? Besides—roses don’t talk.”
