‘The Wars of the Roses lasted from 1455 to 1487…’ Alice’s sister looked up from her book. ‘Now, Alice, do tell me, which side won in the end? The red rose, or the white?’
‘The white rose, perhaps,’ said Alice, settling the finished flower crown onto her little kitten Dinah’s head.
Alice’s sister lowered the history book in her hands, glanced up into the tree, and said firmly, ‘Alice! Might I ask you to pay proper attention to your history lesson?’
‘But Sister,’ said Alice, still fiddling idly with the daisies on the crown, ‘who could ever sit through a book with no pictures in it? Besides — roses don’t talk.’
